Our competitive instincts have been ingrained in us from the get go.  Our parents pushed us to join sports teams and encouraged us to pound on the competitor.  Is that always a great idea? Not necessarily because we have to realize that we can’t be all things to everyone.  There are many companies that have great ideas, great execution, penetrated markets and most importantly complimentary products and services.

Look on LinkedIn to find the most admired companies.  Are they friend or foe? Have you made attempts to contact them in person or online? Have you followed their personal or company updates?

On occasion I have looked for an obscure item that is not readily mentioned online. I may ask my local network or walk into a local store to look for it.  When I don’t find it, I will ask an employee where I might find it.  I am really surprised by the answers.  Some company employees will not mention a word – they take the competitive stance.  Other company employees will go as far as giving you a phone number or directions to a store in which you might find the item.  I generally give repeat business to the latter. If they are so kind to save me time and work with other local businesses to give each other referrals, then this is where I want to plant my customer roots! Take some time to grow your local network and exchange business with them.  The same goes for online referrals.

If you exchange links with a complimentary or local business, you will grow your business and increase your website hit rate. These are niche markets that you want to attract, namely local business and those searching for items that are similar to what you offer. Besides, someday you might want to change jobs and guess which companies might give you an open door!
